should a coin of vg to bu be kept in a folder or should they be collected in 2x2s etc? I've broken out a few Lincoln Wheat Cents that were bought as bu but aren't graded by one of the services, they just look darn good without any scratches or rough bag marks. Should I take them back out of the book and put them in the other option? I don't think I'll ever achieve a complete set of au or bu coins in any of my albums so I'd like to make them as eye catching as possible.

Did that make any sense

It's up to you. That's the beauty of collecting. You can individualize (is that a word?) your collection to your tastes, including how you store and display the coins. For what it's worth, I do a little of each. I have some in folders, some in 2x2's in boxes, and some in 2x2's in 20-count sheets placed into binders.

My suggestion is take all your coins your not sure of how to store, place in one large container, send to me. No more problems.
Don't know how long you've been collecting coins but here is what I used to and still do. I start with an album. Continue putting coins in it until things get a little difficult to find. Then start a second album of the same type. If I get a coin that is better than what is in #1, in #1 it goes and the one from #1 goest to #2. If there is one already in #2, it goes into a 2x2 and that is put in one of those long red boxes with two rows of 2x2's by Whitman. Next I eventually acquire a new album for those coins. Now all the 2x2 duplicates come out and go into #3. Again, if I find a coin better than what is in #1, it goes into #1, the one from #1 goes to #2 and that one to #3.
Gets worse over the years. I now have well over 100 albums. Each type is multipled sets of the same type of coins. For example Mercury dimes just went up to Album #12. You think you'll never get a fantastically all MS graded coins in one album? Wrong. It may take a long time but if you do what I do, eventually all sets #1 will be fantastic. As an example in my Merc Album there is no coin less than MS60 now.
It is fun at times and when and if you do get a great coin for your set #1, it sometimes makes you a little irritated knowing what you'll be doing for a long time afterwords.

thanks for both replies. I'm kinda doing the entire enchilada too, I got the boxes, the whitman folders, the tubes, and a bunch of loose. I've only been seriously collecting for the past two years now (wow, time went fast) and I've inherited a bunch of items so I'm trying to make a presentable collection, for my own enjoyment and for when I break them out to show someone else.

I need a larger desk, a safe and a few more vicious dogs.

Nice start for only two years. Makes you imagine what you'll have after over 60 years like me.

If all my coins were in albums I'd have to buy a bigger house - well maybe not that bad but I love the good old 2x2.
Proven by time and cheap. A good 2x2 and a good stapler with the boxes to hold them in.

Coin shops been using them forever. Speaks voulumes to me.

Personally I use the albums( many of the same) also one better than the others and the same down the line, I also have the 2x2's and binder's, this is also a favorite as I can move things around and still see exactly what I have. I did not start out this way, I started with an album, the Whitman 1941-date folder, bought it in 1963 for 29-cents, and still have it.
I now, like I am sure other's, have many albums, and many binder's, some albums I use the "shielded covers "to protect from toning, we will see, overall, I just love to collect and learn along the way. I hope when I pass, all the years of collecting( 45+ ) do not go to the highest bidder, or even worse, to a fast talking coin dealer......

An album provides better protection than a folder, and it allows you to see both sides of the coin. Dansco is a popular brand of album.

I prefer my sets in 2x2's, in sheets on a 3 ring binder. It's something about sliding the plastic over the coins that really scares me. If you drop 3-4 k on a key date I find it really hard to stick it in a folder or albumn. There other nice thing is that if a coin is out of your ball park, skip it and you don't have a hole in you collection. I did with my Morgans.

I agree, which is why I like my key dates nicely circulated.
