Thx! Here is a 13th Century Pfennig from the German Free City of Offenburg:

That is SUCH a cool coin!

Somehow it looks like a bad decision was made on how to produce this coin, and it came out with the eagle deeply incuse on the reverse. Not sure how that happens ... almost like an unsuccessful compromise between making a bracteate and making a two sided pfennig (looking on acsearch, there is no doubt it is a pfennig, with weight around 0.5 gr.).

I am guessing most bracteates are out of scope (fractions of a denier/pfennig)?

Nice contributions!

Depends on the denomination. Quite a few bracteates have the value of 1 denier or pfennig, I think (even if they weigh far below 1 g).

Yep I like that there is a whisper of detail for the bishop, but the eagle is deeply struck.

Here is a early 13th Century Denaro from the Italian City State of Verona. You will notice the particularly primitive letterforms--almost cuneiform at this point.

I was wondering when that one would appear . Indeed, the lettering obverse is so blocky as to be almost unreadable. Reverse is at least recognizable as VE RO N A (with the VE tied together).

I think this is my last 13th century contribtuion, from the Lordship of Neufchateau (Lorrraine ... there were many places with this name), Thiebaut I 1281-1303. He then goes on to become Duke of Lorraine, so we will see one more of his coins.

Great remaining detail @tdz!

Here is another Pfennig from the Austrian Duchy of Carinthia. It was issued by Bernhard II and dates to between 1220 and 1235 AD:

I forgot ... One more from late 13th c., because of some confusion on attribution.
Duchy of Lorraine, probably late in reign of Frederick III (1251-1303).
Post-Your-Old-Times-Deniers-And-Pennies-600-1700-C.-E.
Post-Your-Old-Times-Deniers-And-Pennies-600-1700-C.-E.

Obverse: F DVX
Reverse: NANCEI

Earlier attribution of this type was to Frederick IV who reigned 1312-1328, but more recently it has been pointed out that a coin of another principality copied it in 1301.
