Last of my trio of Sigismund II denars, this one from the City of Elbing, 1556 (reverse image was used for the "tiny coin" thread): As discussed elsewhere, both Gdansk and Elbing use "stacked" crusader crosses for their coat of arms, dating back to their affiliation with the Teutonic Order. In Elbing, the lower cross is incuse on a crosshatched background.

That is a pretty interesting negative-space cross @tdz. I've got this Portuguese Dinheiro that dates to the last quarter of the 13th Century into the first quarter of the 14th Century. On the reverse, the shields taken together generally form a cross.

Beautiful denars! (And dineros and dinheiros and so on.) I especially love that Elbing design with the inverted cross. My own 1556 Gdansk denar is nowhere near as well photographed, or as well preserved for that matter... There's clearly been quite some chipping on that already-tiny coin, and it's so dark that it's hard to see any design.

I count that one as #197!!! Here is a 1573 denar struck in the city of Gdansk during the interregnum between Sigismund August II, the last ruler of the Jagiello dynasty (1386-1572), and Poland's first elected king, Henry of Valois. I will sit out until #201
