Thx all! This mid-14th Century Pfennig comes from the Swiss Bishopric of Basel. The flan is so thin that the design shows up as a negative on the rev.

Quote: Is there a date somewhere in the legend? Nope sorry not on these. Oddly enough, there are several 14th Century Hungarian Denars which are datable (by their designs) to a single year. These are both attributed as Frynas H.24.46. Off the top of my head I'm not sure, but roughly a hundred or so years later is when the die cutters started adding the date to the inscription in Hungary.

Good question @dear. It is more of comparing the design elements, diameter, and any remnant letters of the inscription. In this case, the obv has a crowned bust, facing, holding a scepter and globus cruciger with REGIS KAROLI. The rev has a shield with the coat of arms of both Hungary and Anjou with + M REGIS HVNGARIE. This highlights why having good reference material is so important to medieval numismatics. For tonight, I'd like to post an other Pfennig from Silesia. This one was minted at Sorau on behalf of Johann von Biberstein. The central letter S on the rev is clear enough, but that "squiggly" design element is solitary antler and part of the Biberstein coat of arms.

Very cool. They sure didn't change the design much over hundreds of years!
