Quote: Philip of Spain would be seen as King of England about as much as Camilla is seen as Queen i.e. not at all. So, not everyone who gets their mug on a coin is considered a true royal. Maybe a thread with royal husband/wife coins is in order discuss such subtleties (or not-so-subtleties)? 1553 Lithuanian half groat:

One of the first French coins minted with a mechanical press. Also my oldest dated coin, so my last contribution to this fascinating thread. France 1553, teston.

Quote: Also my oldest dated coin, so my last contribution to this fascinating thread. Do I remember correctly that you picked up a nice Lorraine teston struck in the reign of Antoine? That would be earlier And speaking of Lorraine, here is a 1552 sol, reportedly used to pay the Lorraine troops engaged in resisting Henry II's takeover of the cities of Metz, Toul and Verdun (which were part of the Holy Roman Empire). The date is divided by the shield, with 15 on the right and 52 on the left. It is struck in the name of Nicholas of Vaudemont who was regent for the minor duke Charles III, who was abducted by Henry's troops during the 1552 campaign, then raised in Henry's court at Paris.

Quote: Sechling from the German Duchy of Mecklenburg I think the engraver(s) in Mecklenberg had fun making silly faces for the cows on their coins, Can't get away with that if you're doing a person;s portrait. 1551 Lithuanian half groat:
