I have very little knowledge of Byzantine coins and would be grateful for any help to properly attribute this coin.

It appears to be an anonymous Bronze follis of the joint reign of Basil II and Constantine VIII, 976-1025 AD. It is 29 mm in diameter and weighs 10.17 gr. Checking on Wildwinds there are dots, crosses, squares etc in the limbs of the nimbate cross, but I don't see any crescents. Could what I see as a crescent be an imperfect o, as why would there be crescents on a Christian image?

Thanks, Jim

Here are a couple of similar, Jim. They do appear to be crescents.

Many thanks, Bob. I can comfortably give the coin the reference Sear 1813 now.

My wife had been doing a bit of research on the web and found the following:

"Some of Basil II's coins do feature a crescent, such as the AR miliaresion coin that has a "pellet in crescent" as part of the cross design.
Significance: While not a universal feature on all of his coinage, the inclusion of symbols like the crescent could have had religious or symbolic meaning, though the exact significance would need further research for each specific coin type."

So the meaning of the crescent remains obscure.

Interesting. I've got SB 1813(8) with five dots in each arm of the cross.
Wonder if anyone has tried to order the issue of the various subtypes (seems like the kind of exercise that the MEC gang take up, but I don;t think they are publishing a volume that covers Byzantine coins).
