1837 Capped Bust Quarter Variety Attribution?

adam126402 Pillar of the Community United States 892 Posts	Posted 07/20/2024 12:46 am I know this coin is pretty well trashed and holed, but since it's here in my collection, I decided to see if I could determine the variety. I see both PCGS and NGC note Browning varieties 1 through 6. I don't find a match to this coin. The main visible feature that does not line up to any of these varieties is the flag on the 7 nearly touching the 3. B-4 seems like the closest possibility re the narrow 3/7 gap, but still seems like a miss. It weighs 6.4g, a little short but based on the worn state and small filled hole, seems about right. It's not magnetic and diameter is 24.2m, which also lines up, so not thinking it's a contemporary counterfeit. For anyone that is familiar with the series, what are your thoughts, might this be an unknown obverse die? Report this Post to the Staff

Zurie Pillar of the Community United States 5676 Posts	Posted 07/20/2024 07:56 am It matches B-4 pretty well, including the position of the stars and the die crack through STATES on the reverse. My guess is the 7 took a hit, which flattened and stretched out the top serif to be closer to the 3. Report this Post to the Staff
