Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806 - 1859) on a 2006 British £2 coin: One of the greatest engineers ever, Brunel tended to perfect existing inventions (tunnelling shields, railway locomotives, ships and bridges). But he's generally considered to have invented the transatlantic steamship (the SS Great Britain), the double-hulled ship (the SS Great Eastern) and the prefabricated field hospital (first used in the Crimean War and since used all over the world in conflicts from WW1 to Korea). One of his inventions that didn't quite work out was the atmospheric railway, in which trains were propelled by a piston moving in a vacuum tube. One line worked by this process was built in Devon, England, but it was a failure and was converted to operation by conventional steam locomotives after just a few months.

Leonardo da Vinci is one of history's most famous inventors. Who's got a Leonardo da Vinci coin or medal?

What a shame there is no coin for Joseph Swan. He had a patent for a light globe in the U.K., the year before Edison.

Quote: Who's got a Leonardo da Vinci coin or medal? I checked when you started this thread, but I didn't have one. Best I could find was just his name on a coin. 2019 Italy 2 euros commemorating 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci's death. The design shows a detail of the painting 'Dama con l'ermellino' (Lady with an Ermine) by Leonardo da Vinci (Czartoryski Museum in Krakow).

Quote: I kicked off this thread with a medal from 1947 that commemorated the centennial of Thomas Edison's birth, I'm returning now with the 2004 US Silver Dollar that commemorated the 125th Anniversary of Edison's light bulb. Fantastic!

Artist: Armindo Ribeiro ( Viseu , January 11, 1916 - Viseu, 2004) was a sculptor , painter and medalist from Viseu, Portugal. He adopted the stage name Armindo Viseu . I guess I've always thought of Leonardo as a forward thinking designer vs. an inventor. https://www.da-vinci-inventions.com...i-inventions
