Quote: I guess I've always thought of Leonardo as a forward thinking designer vs. an inventor. What is any inventor if not a forward-thinking designer?

Quote: Inventors design and create things that work ? Not always, sometimes they invent things on paper, get a patent, then sell it to a manufacturer that build things that work..

Time to highlight another United States Founding Father who is better remembered for career aspects other than inventions - George Washington. Washington was the Commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, the first President of the United States (under the US Constitution), a successful entreprenaur/businessman and a successful farmer. It is connection with the latter than he invented the 16-Sided Threshing Barn (for wheat). From the George Washington's Mount Vernon web site: "The real innovation of Washington's 16-sided barn was the way it combined and automated several steps.
Before, beating the straw to break out the grain, separating the straw from the grain, and hauling the grain to storage were separate steps.
In the 16-sided barn, everything happens at once. It also provides protection from the elements and greatly improves the efficiency of the process, cutting Washington's losses in half."Here's Washington's first appearance on official US coinage: 1900 Lafayette Memorial Dollar.

Here's another US commemorative coin that features George Washington - he is the main focus of this one: 1999 George Washington Death Bicentennial Gold Half Eagle. Washington was born in 1732 (Popes Creek, Virginia Colony - now the George Washington Birthplace National Monument) and died in 1799 (Mount Vernon, Virginia - his longtime home). As always, I added the Uncirculated version (vs. Proof) to my collection.
