Here's another New York University Hall of Fame for Great Americans medal - George Westinghouse. George Westinghouse (b. 1846; d. 1914) is well-remembered for his invention of the air brake for railroad cars, the gas shock absorber for automobiles, the electrical transformer (to control electricity flow, with Nikola Tesla) and hydroelectric generators (at Niagara Falls), among other inventions.

Quote: Hall of Fame for Great Americans at NYU also paid tribute to the inventive Wright Brothers. Paul Fjelde was the artist of this 1967 issue by MACO. Fantastic!

Prior to becoming the 16th President of the United States and leading the country through its Civil War, Abraham Lincoln invented - and patented - a device designed to help boats navigate shallow areas of seas, lakes or rivers. (Lincoln had spent extended time in his youth on the Mississippi River as a ferryman and so was familiar with some of the navigational obstructions present.) The device worked by using "buoyant air chambers" (Lincoln's words) that could be lowered into the water, then inflated to decrease a boat's draft and help it pass over obstructions or free itself from an obstruction; Lincoln received his patent in May 1849. The device was never put into practical/commercial production. Lincoln was the first US President to receive a patent, and remains the only US President ever to do so. I have an Uncirculated version and a Proof version of the 2009 Lincoln Silver Dollar. The Uncirculated version was purchased individually, the Proof coin came in the "Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set."
