Can anyone help me understand the values listed in Renniks catalogue for the "M" and"S" counterstamped 2002 $1 Year of the Outback coins please?

In the "Non circulating legal tender" section the coins are valued at $6. In the "mobile press counterstamped one dollar uncirculated coins" section they are listed at $195. Are they actually different varieties or is there something wrong with the catalogue? My McDonald's catalogue only lists the coins as being stamped and released at the ANDA shows and their value is similar to the lower value in Renniks.

Even if the ANDA show coins were released in a different folder to the RAM version, surely that wouldn't be the reason for nearly $190 difference in the values. Can anyone shed some light on that one for me please?

Bit sad that no one could shed some light on this. Anyway I have tried to do some research and my conclusion is that there is only one variety of each counterstamped or mintmarked 2002 $1 year of the Outback coin.
Recent sales on ebay and most other coins still for sale suggest that the real value of those coins is in line with the lower values listed in both McDonald's and Rennicks. I don't know where Rennicks get their $120/195 values for the "S" counterstamped coin from. I assume that it is an error.

Interesting though there is at least one dealer is asking for over $200 for an "S" counterstamped coin. I would expect that dealers know the real value of the coins they offer for sale. Maybe relying on dodgy listings in 'trusted' catalogues to inflate the price? Hmmm?

I have collected one as an 'extra' in a bulk lot of carded coins in an auction, pic attached. Can anyone tell me whether it is the $6 version or the higher value one? I am confident that it is $6 at best.

Sally some information about the $1 2002 Outback counterstamp coins.
The more expensive ones were counterstamped at the Agricultural shows on a portable press and has a heavily struck letter than the ANDA fair coins.

Thanks for the info Jens. I am still confused though. The Renniks catalogue lists the coins from the ANDA shows as the more valuable ones at $195. It also lists a coin stamped with "S" on a mobile press in Sydney valued at $120.

The McDonald's catalogue states that all the "S" coins were stamped "for the first time by the mobile press set up at the Sydney ANDA show from April 19 -21 2002". The value in McDonald's also correlates to the value in Renniks for the NCLT version at around $6. The stated mintages also match in both catalogues.

I can't find any other references to two or more different versions of the counterstamped coins. I suspect that there is only one version of the counterstamped coin and that the higher values quoted in Renniks are not correct. Happy to be proven wrong and if there really are three different versions of the "S" counterstamped coin, how can we tell them apart?

I only have older catalogues (2009-2011)and they show the counter-stamped 2002 coin worth $6-$7 dollars
So unless something has happened in demand recently cannot understand why this coin would be worth more

Perhaps some kind of hype on this coin? None that I can directly see

Could be a simply case of price high - sell low

If you want to see the difference between a mobile press counter stamped coin versus a RAM mint pressed coin see the following link

Thank you Mr Cruise for that info and links. That helps shed a little more light on things.

As far as I can work out from my research and the various bits of information that I have been provided with, the counterstamped 2002 coins were ALL counterstamped on a mobile press at Agricultural shows and ANDA shows. I cannot find any evidence of the coins being sold in anything other than the "RAM folder". That would mean the 2002 $1 Year of the Outback Counterstamped Coins only differ based on where (Ag show or ANDA show) they were counterstamped. Why there are different values quoted for them is a mystery to me - maybe a sort of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" sort of thing? A brief review of sold prices on ebay shows coins being sold for a few dollars each which correlates with the lower values quoted in both McDonalds and Renniks. I suspect that the higher values quoted are erroneous.

It seems as though coins counterstamped from 2003 (or maybe 2004?) were counterstamped at the RAM with some extra coins being counterstamped at the Ag and ANDA shows. That means there are two different varieties of such coins due to the differences in the pressures used to create the counterstamp. The values quoted in both catalogues show a slightly higher value for the coins stamped on the mobile press - presumably due to fewer coins being stamped that way?

If any conclusion I have drawn above is incorrect or if anyone has anything else to add, please add your comments. Thank you very much to all who took an interest and provided input. I appreciate your time and effort and thank you for your help. Happy collecting.

There is an ebay seller that is selling the 2002 'S' Counter-stamped coin for $7.50

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364627243838

So I guess not everyone thinks it it worth close to $200
