Hi everyone,
I thought you might like to see this, I think it was well after the time when flushing public toilets were introduced here in1852 by George Jennings a plumber from Brighton in the UK, and we had to spend a penny to use them. Someone (I don't know who) brought out these little purses for a "Just in Case" emergency, I think they were a brilliant idea for the time.

Very cool! Wonder if coins left in those 'leather'(?) pouches picked up any toning?

Very cool coin holster, Safi!

Absolutely, ijn. The chemicals used to tan leather would certainly affect a coin left holstered for any length of time.

the penny that was in it had indeed gathered a bit of verdigris, so swapped it for a clean one.

You should put the original back in - no sense in ruining another coin. Plus the verdigris is part of the story now.

In a similar vein, there are some official penny sized tokens to operate the locks, presumably for use by the cleaners.
