I have several of these and they don't look like post mint damage to me (although I am often wrong on these matters). Is there an issue with the alloying?

I don't think so. CuNi alloy doesn't really split like that into different metals again.

It's corrosion but from what? My guess would be an acid like chemical.

It is copper colored and that is what made me think alloy issue.
