NGC - Coin of the Day: British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was knighted on this day in 1953. This Great Britain Crown was issued in 1965, the year that he died.

Quote regarding the 1960 Churchill Crown:

"There is no doubt many would say the the beauty of the Churchill crown increases in direct proportion to the amount of wear it has sustained"
- Coincraft's 1999 Catalogue English and UK Coins 1066 to Date P.493

I disagree.
I think that the 3/4 bust of Churchill by Oscar Nemon is of high artistic merit.
However, I was never keen on the Queen's Gillick bust of that date.

The Churchill crown was, and even still is, widely pilloried for being an "ugly coin" - to the extent that it's become somewhat of a coin meme. Whenever one of my coin clubs has an "Ugly coin" theme night, more than one member brings one of these along.

I suspect much of the dislike stems from the "typical" condition these coins are found in: highly beaten-up and dinged, as the Mint used regular coinage presses for their production and took little care to prevent scratches and dents.
