Crispus?-No-Exact-Match-In-Ric
Crispus?-No-Exact-Match-In-Ric

Weight: 2.8 grams
Diameter 16 mm

Not in great shape and obviously of fairly low value but I'd love to have an attribution to emperor.

The obverse letters that I can make out appear to be S NOB CAES
The reverse letters that I can make out are PROVIDI
The reverse has a camp gate with 7 layers, 2 turrets and a star (I think)

A word search indicates that the only ruler in the era 350 CE or so with this combination is Crispus, and there are many, but in RIC none are facing right with a camp gate having 7 layers. There is one with 6 layers.

Unfortunately the name of the ruler is not visible to me. Is it plausible that this is really Crispus or?

Is this

The entry for RIC VII Arelate 266 on the online RIC site: https://numismatics.org/ocre in the results listing
says "Camp gate with two turrets, without doors, varying number of stone layers; star above"

I searched using the filters:
Fulltext: s nob caes
Material: Bronze
Object Type: Coin
Portrait: Crispus
Sort Category: Reverse Legend, Descending and then scrolled through the list.

That is not right because the coin Oriole posted is a laureate head; while Arles 266 is laureate, draped and cuirassed. Arles 266 also doesn't have an obverse legend break.

for comparison-- an Arles 266

The problem with trying to ID a coin in this condition is that you can't even tell if it is an official issue-- which it could very well be unofficial as unofficial campgates are plentiful.

Just from the reverse, I would initially say Rome because it looks like there might be a wreath in the mintmark; but nothing else is correct for the Rome issues for Crispus. So, unofficial is looking even stronger.

However, exact ID is an exercise in futility when the condition of a coin is poor.

Thanks. This looks like one that will remain without exact attribution. An unofficial issue seems quite plausible. If such is the case I would not expect that the number of layers would necessarily match. But, in this condition, an exact match might only turn a $1 coin into a $3 coin.

the number of rows is not really a good way to ID campgates
