Missing copper layer - either it was skipped during the copper electroplating phase or more likely, someone monkeyed with it and removed the copper. Can you see any indication of a copper color while holding the coin on an angle and rotating?

Edit to add: what you are seeing is Zinc

Plated cent
Here are three I just did. One by heat. One by a silver plating solution. And one by Zinc+NaOH

Very doubtful the copper was removed as this is not easy. I challenge anyone here to do it.

A common answer here is that acid will do it. No it won't. Acid will attack the zinc much much faster than it will touch the copper.

It is incredibly easy and does not require acids.

Boiling CaOH and sulfur isn't something you would want to do without a decent fume hood.

How to do it easily at home?

Question...Couldn't you use the cent as the anode (if that's the right term) in a copper plating process (bath).

Think I'll ask my plating forum group.

I believe with the weight shown (would be better to have an accuracy to 2 decimal points) but
I would say the lack of copper showing would have been done Post Minting Process.
Was it removed or covered up or chemically transformed? I dunno. 2.5 grams tells a story here.

Agreed, need 2 decimals but even with that weight will not tell us much. Specs are 2.5 with variance of .1 = 2.4 to 2.6. With Zn of 97.5% and Cu of 2.5% (Cu has slightly more mass than Zn) you would still never be able to tell - from weight - if it was plated over copper or the copper was stripped.

Mid-range XRF can read up to 50 microns and with plating (at least the garden variety) only be able to lay down 2-5 microns, any TPG could figure it out in a heartbeat. So I return to my prior comment, if you rotate at an angle under light, can you see any flashes of copper. If so, some ebay hack laid down a coat of Zn in their basement and tried to pass it off as one of those "Rare Error Coins"
