Beautiful day until the sun dips behind the mountain....brrr... But a worthy outing, 2nd Morgan in 3 weeks, another 1921 sans mint (P). My buddy pulled a 1923 Peace too.

Quote: 2nd Morgan in 3 weeks Who says you have to go to England to pull up old chunks of silver out of the dirt. Well done!

A mere 20 yards away from the Morgan and my buddy's Peace, a 1922-S Peace today. I've never encountered so many dirt dollars in one area. Hopefully some more before the snow comes.

Any idea why there is a plethora of coins in that area? Just curious how things get lost, sometimes in abundance.

After a 4th silver dollar within a half football field - and few other silvers - we were having that exact conversation today. Really nothing more than speculating no matter what we come up with. There is zero published history on this area nor any indication of a homestead/buildings/etc. But I will be going back :-)

Well still giveth, another 1921 today. Will never quite understand why all these are in this area...nor do I really care why...but we shall return again tomorrow. Now if we can just start yanking some Standing Liberty quarters from the lates teens and early 20's.

Five silver dollars in a small area? Starting to sound like you have found a hoard.

Indeed, how do you account for so many large coins in such a small area?

A pattern may be emerging. They were all located in somewhat of a line in the low point of this field that progressively gains elevation. We were working our way uphill today. The current guess is someone on horseback was shedding these as he/she rode up to a hunting camp (or something similar).
My dream however, is different. It goes like this: In 1926, someone robbed a local bank of 5000 silver dollars and 1000 Double Eagles. A few were dropped on the way to their hideout. They buried the loot because the sheriff was hot on their tail. A gunfight ensued and all the banks robbers perished. The loot was never found...........
