I have this 1882 Shield nickel with a die crack from the rim, through I, through the upper leaf and ends at the cross. My main question is, what is going on with the entire IN GOD WE TRUST motto. The letters are flat, maybe some clashes, sinking die, or what?

This series is riddled with die issues, but that's a first for me.

Could it be from Die Deterioration? I have no idea other than that.

Quite common for 1882 (and 1883) to show mushy letters in the motto. Not sure of the cause.
