I'm posting this one hoping to learn something about how TPGs grade.

This is not my coin. I saw it on ebay.

This 1853 Braided Hair Large Cent is in an "Surfaces Smoothed - AU Details" holder. The coin appears to be nearly full red but the slab doesn't say anything about "Altered Color".

Does this mean that PCGS feels the red is original or is this the by-product of the smoothing process?

I'd appreciate any insights. This one has me confused. Thanks.

I have no idea but that would be a fun one to crack out and put in a Dansco 7070 if the price was right.

Hard to tell what's going on with the vertical lines on the neck and lower face. Scratches?

To my eye, those vertical lines on neck and truncation are light scrape lines.
I also there is slight surface disturbance around the star in front of Lib's eye.

"AU detail" is the correct grade for this coin.

I do not think that the 'altered color' is artificial, but is just part of the natural toning for this coin,
and that is why PCGS has not commented on it.
