matt2442 Valued Member United States 108 Posts	Posted 05/13/2025 8:15 pm I'm curious if anyone can help me understand what's happening in the borders/rim of this 1827 half dollar. The edges lack any dentils, which I thought these should have. I saw some examples in the PCGS app that look similar, so I'm curious if the smooth edges are due to strike issues? Thanks. jacrispies Pillar of the Community United States 3848 Posts	Posted 05/14/2025 11:33 am Because these early half dollars were struck with an open collar, the outward flowing Die Deterioration happened fairly quickly compared to modern productions. Eventually the dentils disappeared from the dies leaving a smooth rim. Below are two photos of the same 1814 O-105a die marriage. The top photo shows much deterioration with half of the dentils missing. The bottom coin shows nearly all of the dentils missing. Therefore we can conclude the top coin was struck likely a few hundred before the second. Suffering from bust half fever. Want to learn how to attribute early half dollars by die variety?
