I'm Bill and brand new to coins but I'm hooked. My father passed recently and looking for some paper work I needed I found a box with just a couple coins in it.
1 was a 1890 Morgan , 1923 Peace and a 1945 half dollar dollar.
I thought it was just so cool that I was holding money that was used in the late 19th century and early 20th.

So I looked up the value of the coins and then that turned into me getting my change bucket and spent a entire day looking and scanning coins.

The unfortunate part is that I am new and when it comes to rating I have absolutely no idea. I'm sure I could tell one that is excellent from one that is garbage but everything in between I wouldn't even begin to know how. I did find a couple 194 0 Lincoln pennies that one of them looks like a error coin that seems to be priced very nicely I just have no idea how to tell if it really is this coin that is valuable. I was really surprised that some of the value of modern day quarters a couple of them that I have that I scanned says they were worth $118 which is pretty hard for me to believe but I'm really interested in all this and look forward to spending some time here and finding out a lot more about coins. Thanks guys and take care

I appreciate that
I probably should have left the passing part out. Not the best first post to say hello,
I do appreciate the kind words

I found these great coins because I had to go through his cabinet to find some paperwork and found those cool coins which led me here so I guess that's why I mentioned it.

Thanks!

Bill, You've come to the right place for advice. You will have to learn how to post pictures of coins you have a question about in order for us to help you. There are tutorials on this site to show you how to do that. I strongly suggest getting a copy of the " Red Book" which will enlighten your knowledge of coin collecting. Don't place much faith in the values they assign however. A better indicator of value is what the market is willing to pay for it. ebay completed listings is a good place to start for values. As far as grading, even for a novice, the PCGS site has a photograde where you can match the condition of your coins to a picture to establish a grade. It still requires experience to properly grade coins but here is a link to get you started.

One more word of caution, the marketplace has been flooded with counterfeit coins for quite some time and even certified "slabbed" coins have been counterfeited. You really need to be careful with this. Best wishes and happy collecting!
