I bought, among other things, a Canadian quarter from the local coin store's junk bowl. I bought it just because it has a caribou on it. I later noticed it was dated 1968. Could it be 50% silver? Alas, it stuck to a magnet so it is 99.9% nickel. But being nickel, it is still worth about 7½ U.S. cents as scrap metal. Do any Canadians hoard 99.9% nickel coins sort of like some Americans hoard pre-1982 copper pennies? Is it true that the Canadian government is actively withdrawing 99.9% nickel coins from circulation?

Yes the nickel coins are being culled by the ARP program. Alloy Recovery Program. Cheaper to mint coins lead to this. I keep the ones I find to pass along to kids, like students or Scouts etc. It still has 25 cent buying power, so the 7.5 cents melt makes no sense except to the mint.

I'm not Canadian but I have a bag full of the Canadian 100% nickel coins that I find roll searching. Just waiting for the price of nickel to go up

I estimate 95% of the nickels, dimes and quarters I get in change are post 2000 and made of nickel plated steel. I may find one or two pure nickel coins on average when looking through rolls. I have hoarded a bunch, but how many do I really need? I tend to release most back out into circulation now, unless it's a nice looking AU.

I saved them when I got them in the US. Rarely see any Canadian coins in Michigan anymore except cents. I see those commonly during cent CRH. I think there are now more Canadian cents circulating in the US than Canada.

LOL.

I've saved Canadian coinage since I was a youngster finding them in circulation pretty frequently in PA. About 12 years ago when I was actively roll searching nickels I ran across 2 boxes than contained an abnormally large amount of older Canadian nickels dating back to the 1920's. I found it very odd (living in NC) but was able to fill a lot of those pesky holes in my Whitman folder I had since the 1970's (as well as putting away several rolls of nickel 5 centers).
