Does someone out there definitely know when, even in approximate terms, PCGS introduced the specimen "SP" designation? Is this something relatively recent, say in the last decade or so, or has this designation been around for some time? Any straightforward and factual response to this question would be most welcome, especially anything in the Australian context.

The designation itself has existed long before PCGS was around... I know that they were using it from the get-go when they launched in 1986 to identify certain very early US special strikes. They were using it from the beginning of their Canadian coin grading when they began in 1989, because we call all of our special strike/pre Elizabeth proof coins specimens..its just something that stuck over here.

Specimen is something they like to pull out for a coin that is obviously specially produced but may not have the characteristics of a full proof or may not have any supporting documentation or circumstantial evidence as to why it may have been produced in a special strike format.

I know, none of this directly relates to australian coins, but I figured I'd share what I do know... If you encountered an Australian coin that they graded specimen, the odds are that it was graded before they had their terminology down pat for you guys or it was applied to a coin which they're not familiar with in proof but which they recognized is of a special nature in its production quality.

Thank you, Will, for your insights here. I'm trying to get something buttoned down with regards to this supposed specimen shilling https://www.noble.com.au/auctions/lot/?id=348087 (formerly part of this set https://www.noble.com.au/auctions/lot?id=188304 ) which, as I have learned, was slabbed by PCGS sometime early in 2016 (see https://numisbid.com.au/itm/94470/A...men_Shilling ). When I pressed the former auction house about "MS" and "SP" designation, their response was, and I quote, "...The coin is in an older PCGS slab, pre-dating the SP designation introduced in 2015. Before this, coins were designated either MS or PR, with no differentiation for specimen coins..." I found this is a bit odd, especially given that the coin was sold as a raw, uncertified item in November 2015, and to my knowledge had not previously been encased in a holder.

I would be particularly interested to hear from anyone who has good, supported knowledge of pre-decimal specimen Australian silver coinage.
