I recently purchased this slab coin because I thought it might be an overdate variety. The buy price was $64 with free shipping. I got the coin today and I was right, it is an overdate variety. What I don't understand is why NGC didn't designate it as an 1858/7. I would appreciate any comments.

Nice find! I have found these in slabs without proper attribution multiple times.

You have to pay the variety fee to get the label and it seems some people just don't know this or don't care.

That's a pretty subtle thing to catch when spending 60 seconds on grading the coin. Assuming the folks doing the grading are familiar with the variety attribution at all.

That's expecting too much from the graders. No one will ever know every variety out there. You need to pay for attribution, not expect it.

Thanks to all for the info and feedback. I thought that the grading firms might let submitters know they had a variety and let them decide to pay a variety fee or not. I guess they don't have the time to notify customers due to the volume of coin grading they have to process to be profitable.
