When you buy peoples estates you get whatever the collector was working with. So things like this are in there. 1.44 g, 18 mm.

My impression is that's a phallus being worn on the head in the portrait, if such can narrow it down at all.

OK, I can spot a few Empress who might fit the image. But what is this? A clay imprint from a die? It is very light so not lead etc.Is it ancient? Looks aged. Like you see a thumb print from whoever pressed this into whatever they pressed it in on the reverse.

Head scratcher for sure. Maybe a uniface clay token from Asia Minor or north Africa, looks old to me. I have a couple uniface clay tokens time of Heraclius with Peter/Paul and cross on them.

Are there a lot of tesserae made from clay Bob? I don't have any, but it seems like they are most often made from lead or a copper alloy. They also seem to be largely two-sided and this piece is uniface. With that said, I don't have a better idea for what this might be and you are right about these things like 99.99% of the time...

Added: ok I take that back, there are a couple hundred instances of clay tesserae on acsearch. Many of the uniface ones have a partial finger/handprint on the back. I'm convinced!

I'm with ya Bob.
Maybe Otacilia Severa or Herennia Etruscilla, Heck maybe Zenobia?

Found this resource, looking through it now.
