Working On A 7070 US Type Set... Updated (06/10/2010)

WOW what a great collection, something to aspire to that's for sure. The good thing is that I am still young and will hopefully have many years work on and enjoy a set like this.

Wow Gary, that is quite a collection. Just the commemrative set alone would be quite an achievement. I have completed my 7070 with the gold page. Although it would have been harder, I would have also liked a more complete representation of types. In spite of that it is quite an impressive display of US coin history. I started with the least expensive coins because I already had some of those. I set a minimum grade of VF-20. I have already upgraded most of those, but I got most of my money back on the originals by selling them on ebay. One other thing that I did was to complete the entire set before placing them in the album to minimize any possible damage to the coins by my mishandling. Of course that went by the way after I started upgrading. Anyway I see no signs of damage such as slide marks whatsoever. Just be careful. I had to save the gold for last because I couldn't afford them until I received the gift of some gold bullion coins from a relative. Best of luck.

Great thread guys. I am also going to start a 7070, and was thinking the same thing yesterday: Start with the least expensive coins, or the most expensive? Just as a point of reference, which coins in the 7070 are the most difficult to acquire? It will be especially tough for me, since I live in Canada and am trying to find good sources with low shipping.

In addition to the Seated dollars, the Draped Bust and Classic Head large cents are tough and expensive to acquire as well.

Thanks for all the comments. I spent about 10 years building the set. I do have the coins for the hoder that has the 3 holes but they are in slabs and I couldn't make myself crack them out. They are 1800 PCGS Ef-40 1/2 dime, 1806 PCGS Ef-45 Quarter, and 1828 PCGS Ef-40 quarter. I also have a 1807 PCGS Au-50 bust dime and a 1800 PCGS Ef-45 bust dollar to go with the set. That rounds out the 1800- 1987 type set.

Well, just for a little update, I have started my type set and have purchased a few coins for it in the last couple weeks.
Pics To follow. I decided to kind of start in the middle of the road when it comes to price, and leave the high dollar coins for later. I can pick up the cheaper modern coins here and there. What do you think so far?

Wow the two commems and the 1913 buff are really nice for the grade, the texas looks like it could grade higher. All in all a massive effort for a type set and well worth the time and trouble to assemble.
