While looking at images and online videos, I've noticed an odd golden toning specifically on the Silver Proof Washington quarters from the 2000's. I don't own any so I can say personally, its just what I have noticed. I thought it might have been the Dansco albums causing it but now I'm thinking it might be a quality issue from the US Mint. I've had Innovations Reverse Proof coins directly from them that had an odd circular toning on them as well. Has anyone else noticed this? This is the reason I didn't feel comfortable housing proof coins in a Dansco and was planning on using CAPS Albums. But if it is a quality issue from the Mint, I may have to rethink my options. Dansco's would take up less space I saw them in the 153 days of Dansco's on this forum and I'll attach some pics of what I found online as examples. https://goccf.com/t/467882&whichpage=80

Here are my Innovation pics, I ended up returning them to the mint due to the toning. Seems similar

Not sure about the silver quarters, but the golden dollars are really, really picky about storage environment.

Looks more like tarnish than toning to me

Toning and tarnish are the same thing. The difference is subject, we call what we do not like the latter.

I've broken up a lot of the silver proof sets (especially 2000-2007 for some reason I find a lot of them below melt) and have noticed that toning on quite a few of them in the original packaging. I wouldn't steer clear from Dansco because of it.....

The OGP plastic is no more air tight than a Dansco, so these sets are affected by the storage environment just as easily.

I guess nothing is truly air tight. I knew the proof set packaging isn't, even the graded coins are not air tight. I assume even the Air-tite holders can't be air tight since we're talking molecule size air will find a way.

A lot of my silver proofs are also turning brown, and up til now, I thought it was because of them being in my Dansco albums and them being at the last hole in each row. Now I don't think that anymore - I may have to open up my OGP sets to examine them...

Quote: I may have to open up my OGP sets to examine them. Please do and report back. I checked my one and only silver proof 1999 set in OGP and there was no issue but I have only had it in my possession since April of this year. Also if it is not too much trouble can you post a sample pic of the ones in the album that are toning.

But when it comes to US Mint OGP and albums, neither has the advantage an air-tite has. Slabs are somewhere in the middle. More layers also help restrict air movement. I was looking through the 153 Days of Dansco thread and noticed from Dearborn's post of his 7070 that his State Quarter has that same toning. It wasn't on their when he posted the raw photo in his 7070 thread.

Interesting, I'm not as familiar with that color toning. Most of what I've encountered with proof sets from the later ATB Quarters and Womens Quarters eras (2010-2025) is hazing in the fields. This seems to be a consistent problem that isn't directly related to storage environment, because the hazing appeared on a number of my proof sets that I purchased directly from the Mint and have since safely stored in a humidity-controlled environment. I'm wondering if it's related to the wash/rinse that the blanks receive at the Mint.

I have 7 silver proof sets in the OGP that have (as of today) no issue - I just checked to be sure since I haven't put eyes on them for several years. Mine are dated between 1995 and 2001 and have been with me since new. I would say it is almost certainly a factor of storage environment.
