I have the chance to buy them but they aren't graded. Wondering your thoughts.

The first one:

Here's the second one. A few have told me it looks cleaned but I'm still unsure:

If those scratches are on the coin and not the 2x2,
then I would say they have both been cleaned.
Unless they are selling for a really low price, I would pass.

Based on these photos they both look harshly cleaned to me. I say pass on them unless they are selling at bullion value.

I agree with being cleaned, but they are very scarce coins. To me, the first one has an "8" that's not right, but little in the date digits look like the 2nd coin. The '48's have been faked almost ever since they had been minted. One of the signs of the fakes were the 8's, as well as missing the "EH" below the canoe. The first one looks AU wear-wise, but the second looks nearly uncirculated. Both have very deep cleaning scratches. I agree with the above posters ... find a cert'd one.

Stay away from uncertified 48 dollars, grading fees are such a small percentage of value that it makes any raw coin suspect.
More than half of the raw ones sold recently on ebay are clearly Chinese counterfeits.
Here's what a certified AU cleaned example typically sells for: 177352503845
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Definitely a hard pass. They've both been cleaned. I'd save you money and spend more on nicer uncleaned examples.
