I've never been a 'toning' kind of collector, but going through my Capped Bust stuff I notice this half shining these colors at me, front & back. What do you think, natural or artificial? Is this something special beyond simply a nice 1830, or tarnished and diminished? Thoughts appreciated!

You meant to ask if is market acceptable or not.

It's a gorgeous coin, Tim. I think that it was cleaned long ago and has retoned with that rainbow. I don't think that it detracts from the value - rather, it seems that there are collectors who will fight for coins with this type of toning.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I'm thinking artificial toning. It's still a very nice coin though.

Pretty coin, but not natural toning. It looks like the kind of retoning you can see after an old cleaning.

I love it. I would buy it myself. It looks natural enough to me but I am not an expert. I don't think anyone intentionally altered the coin.

Thanks guys, I never really noticed it before, maybe it was the lighting, but I can see now why some folks get so gaga over toning. None of my other silver coins (you see a few in the OP) have anything like it. The whole AT vs NT thing appears a field of numismatics all unto itself, and now I've dipped my toe :)

Nice looking - rather see that than a bright silver cleaned coin.
