Canadian-Governor-General's-Medal,-1911
Canadian-Governor-General's-Medal,-1911

This is large: 50 mm in diameter and weighs 69.8 grams, and sterling silver.

Governor General's medals are quite popular, especially the older ones. This one from 1911 is only medium old.

The office of the Governor General of Canada, among other things, exercises constitutional duties (such as summoning and dissolving parliament) on behalf of the head of state (the UK monarch).

At that time, the Governor Generals were usually minor royalty. The Duke of Connaught was the 7th child of Queen Victoria. Nowadays, the Governor Generals are Canadian.

The medals were awarded primarily for academic achievement.

The medal, with a matte finish, is an excellent work of engraving.

With the high price of silver, many of these old medals are now sold for little more than the silver value. I

That's a fantastic medal, oriole. Thank you for sharing it and for the accompanying information.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
