Nice pickups. I can't even fathom trying to fill a Shield nickel album. Good luck.

Thank you, Dearborn and seamonkey. Regarding the Shield nickels... I'm going to take my time, find some nice examples and I accept it for what it is. There are coins I'll never be able to obtain. So, I'll fill those in with other coins and build the set to my own budget/needs. My thoughts are I'm going to essentially be using it as a way store the coins, as opposed to doing a normal, straight forward set.

I am planning to purchase all three expensive key date coins at some point. I will most likely purchase either the 1912-S or 1886 first, since they are cheaper. The 1885 will definitely be an expensive purchase and will be the last on my radar. I will most likely purchase them slabbed. But, I am wondering, should I crack them out when I do come across them, or leave them in the slabs? I don't think the 12-S or 1886 would necessarily be a big deal. However, the 1885 I would be a little leary about taking it out of a slab, given that's gonna run me at least 200 dollars or more.

Quote: I will most likely purchase them slabbed. But, I am wondering, should I crack them out when I do come across them, or leave them in the slabs? Low grade, crack and insert. Keep the labels for reference. Some tape them inside their album covers. High grade, keep in the slab. I always buy the lower grades so I know will not feel any guilt cracking them.

Got it! That makes sense. Honestly, most key date coins that I purchase will be lower grades. Lol. I got a small heap of coins recently. Nothing too fancy. I got the hole filler 1887, 1893, the double 1906 coins, and the upgraded 1912-D Okay, the back of the 1887 is REALLY bad lol So out of the two 1906 coins I got, which do you guys think is better? They almost appear to be about the same IMO with the exception of the black discoloration/corrosion on the one

I actually like the cameo on the left one.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I think I agree. Here is the comparison between the newer 1912-D and old one that I had. Not really a gigantic difference, but the newer one does have a bit more detail in the face area, particularly in Liberty Reverse How the set looks now. I'd say I've made quite a bit of progress in a relatively short time. However, my goal is to match the coins as best I can. So, this will definitely be a long term project. I may be on the lookout soon for a really nice 1890 in XF that my coin store had for around 35 dollars. May have to see if they still have it.

Thank you Since I posted something about Shield nickels in this thread, I think I will continue on in this area instead of making an entirely new one. Today, I went back to the same LCS and purchased some really nice looking Shield nickels. 1866 Reverse 1867 - With rays - this sucker wasn't cheap! Reverse I opted for a hole filler 1868, since I have one coming still.. whenever it shows 1869 - Now, this one was cleaned However, given the fact that it was cheap and has great details, IMO it's worth overlooking. Reverse

I am loving the way this is going I also had a slightly corroded, but cheap hole filler 1870 on hand as well, but opted to put it back since I didn't have quite enough cash on hand at the time. I am expecting a nicer 1868 from ebay. Like I said, whenever it shows up. The seller already refunded me since it's been almost three weeks, but was nice enough to allow me to keep the coin when it shows.
