I was a machinist for 7 years and routinely used a bench top grinder to put a bevel on parts. It's not all that hard to do, but make sure you have water close by to keep it cool so you don't burn your fingers. By the way, we used to also shape our own carbide tooling for specialized work.

As others have said, this coin was damaged after it left the Mint. I've seen numerous other examples over the years.
Error coin writer and researcher.
