Silver in coinage and photography has been (will be?) partially replaced by silver in bombs and cars. Could we see a day when electric car batteries are stolen for the silver?

 With people trading silver for gold amidst the reported silver shortage, I can see a scenario where the silver price acts like a helium balloon rising under the weight of the gold price, with each influencing the other's ascent.

You trade an once of gold for "X amount" of silver, when the ratio is high. You can trade the "X amount" of silver back for that same ounce of gold when the ratio is low AND you'll have silver left over, also known as a profit. Or free silver depending how you look at it. People have been making a profit like this by "trading the ratios".
