This was another bulk bin purchase today, where do you think it lands? I'm stuck anywhere between a rather wide range and can't pin it down. Not that I'd sent this one out, but out of curiosity, would that hit to the "M" detail it?   |

My drive by uninformed grade would be XF something and maybe details.

I think the nick is too small to detail the coin - with that said I'd say XF40.

EF-45 details, stains, possibly environmental damage.

IGE, thank you, I was curious about those areas. They appear like odd toning in person on the obverse, almost looks like thin film when tilted in the light but obviously not a "thin" film, and there is some original luster left at about 1 and 6-7 o'clock.
The spot on the reverse just looks like a dull smudge in person. Given that combo I was thinking very old oil or grease.

I see this one as EF-40 details, environmental damage for the gunk on the obverse. The ding on the reverse is minor, and they always look huge in photos, but not in hand. Dimes and fish scales (silver five cents) and the California fractional and US one dollar gold coins get a bit of a pass because of their size, thinness, and soft metal composition. The larger and heavier coins in a coin purse or pocket had a huge bullying advantage.
Just my opinion here, but on this coin, I'd leave the gunk there. Any effort to remove it may expose corrosion that could look worse.
Pretty good bin buy!
