Good News (maybe) penny coin roller hunters!
This may (eventually) temporarily help bring pennies back to your local banks.
Let us know if things get better towards the end of the month.

Quote:
The worsening U.S. penny shortage has prompted the Federal Reserve to resume accepting penny deposits on Jan. 14 at more coin distribution locations.

Why it matters: The move could ease checkout friction for cash-paying shoppers, where a lack of coins has led to rounding, confusion and longer lines.

Driving the news: The Fed said Thursday it will again accept pennies from banks and credit unions at some commercial coin distribution locations where deposits had been suspended because of local inventory constraints.

I'm not so sure. BOA has restricted non-business clients to $5.00 of pennies. BTW, the suspension of penny production did not authorize curtailing circulation of existing cents ... what gives?

jk109e4;
Wow and Correct!
I don't understand what's going on, either. Some areas can't seem to get any pennies, other areas, don't seem to have any problem getting them (fortunately, for me, I'm in the latter)

I have always advocated the idea that
all current bronze and copper alloy plated coins
should be made from re cyclable plastic.

After all,
lots of countries around the World issue re cyclable plastic banknotes.
that are happily accepted by the Public.

In Cincinnati, Fifth Third Bank will not sell any amount of pennies to anyone - for business or personal use. They accept deposits of rolled cents but tell me they are shipped out only and cannot be ordered.

Yet other banks (First Financial, PNC, Heritage) are happy to sell them and can order boxes. Some even have too many!

So here, at least, pennies are still widely available, albeit on a branch to branch basis.

That's crazy!
I have no problem with my small, local bank in SC.
I Haven't needed to ask any of the big banks

Well, my run on pennies has ended!!
My bank just changed their policy and I can't get anymore.
Good thing I did collect several hundred $$$ worth of bank boxes!
Time to ask around some of the other banks in town!

1. "re cyclable plastic" is a bad joke. Maybe 10% of the POTENTIALLY recyclable plastic is actually recycled, and many commercially usable plastic packaging items are not recyclable. FWIW, the "plastic yuan" is a staple of much science fiction, e.g., Snow Crash.

2. I always figured the non-acceptance of cents by the Fed's Contracted Coin Terminals was a knee-jerk reaction and would be amended when the situation stabilized.

Some retail companies have implemented various rounding or other policies (one store has a sign that all cash transactions will be rounded UP to the nearest 5c, with the money going to a named charity - haven't seen any pushback, then again, I've never seen a cash transaction at that store).

Meanwhile... their competitor just posted a sign stating the opposite.

I have never really trusted these business to donate the excesses to charity via round-ups, etc. It just seems too easy to cook those numbers and the fine print usually has some sort of limit to their donation total.

I am nearly all credit card purchasing now. After recently getting screwed by a McDonalds cashier out of my change, I have eliminated all cash transactions that require change.

Re: rounding up for a company to donate the excess

Donate yourself and you get the write off. Rounding up and allowing someone else to donate gives them the write off. Not many stores that offer such an option need any more tax support than they already get.

Off my soapbox.
