XVI / XVII - England - Token / Seal? Great Britain Coat Of Arms

The legend says HONI SOEIT QVI MAL V PENSE, so 'Shame on anyone who thinks evil of it.' Please help me to figure out what this item is. Report this Post to the Staff

publius Pillar of the Community United States 807 Posts	Posted 01/29/2026 10:49 am The inscription is of course the motto of the Order of the Garter, and the arms are those of the Kingdom of England. Equally however, this is certainly not an impression of the Great Seal of England, as those always had a representation of the monarch enthroned, with his or her titles, and the reverse or counterseal was usually the monarch on horseback. Nor, so far as I can tell, could it be the seal of the Order of the Garter, which appears to be something quite different, with an equestrian figure. In any case the Garter is almost always depicted encircling the plain Cross of St George, not the Royal Arms. Edited by publius 01/29/2026 10:50 am Report this Post to the Staff
NumiFan Valued Member Poland 136 Posts	Posted 02/02/2026 11:43 am I've also checked the Order of the Garter option but it doesn't seem to be the correct clue. I tried to dig some more and I saw that many english lead seals look differently as they have an additional lead element on them So, maybe this item is not a seal at all?
