I have had this question bouncing around my brain for a while now. It came up again today because I bought a beautiful mint state coin—and a rare and reasonably valuable variety—and then realized that it has an obvious wheel mark across the obverse.

Are there cases where you would submit an otherwise superb example of a variety for grading, knowing that it would be a Details holder? What is your thought process for that decision?

IMO Brand - a damaged coin is always damaged and will never heal.

I would not submit it knowing there is a details grade upcoming.

So, you just want an attribution but no grade? I think most of them will do that too.

If it's a rarer coin and still would bring more money in value than the grading would cost. Or if you just want an attribution and don't care about the grading fees. There are plenty of Details graded coins on ebay and in auctions.

I've come back to revisit my reply.

Marv65 reply caused me to reconsider, and IMO if the coin has sufficient numismatic premium, even with a Details designation, then I would consider having it slabbed.

Say for example that you have a 1909-S VDB cent with an obvious old cleaning but had retoned and was in the say XF grade range.

Trying to sell that coin raw versus in a TPG Details but authentic holder would be a no-brainer. I'd submit it every time.

I think these are good points. From a monetary standpoint, if the details slab contributed more to resale value than the slab cost, then it might make sense. I suppose if the variety were difficult to establish on a raw coin, perhaps it would also be a good option.

Is there a difference between a Details plus variety slab and a Genuine slab with a variety attribution and an obviously details coin? I have seen both on ebay and wondered at the difference.

I had not considered the establishment of the details coin as a genuine example—I suppose that's important for coins where fakes are a concern. Would ANACS be a sensible path there? If the only relevant concern is authentication of a real coin, I don't imagine that a more expensive PCGS or NGC Details slab adds any extra value over an ANACS or CACG Details slab.
