This otherwise MS nickel has a small lamination flaw on the reverse. It's a standard cupronickel composition 1942 nickel, so I assume it would not get any leeway that the TPGs seem to give the 35% silver War Nickels for laminations. Is this a small lamination, a medium lamination, and how does it affect the grade? Is it a TPG net grade situation? At what point does a lamination flaw push a coin into Details grades?

For this particular coin, it's a moderately rare doubled die, so grading at CAC or another TPG is a possibility. But I would like to understand the general answer, because I come across a fair number of MS War Nickels with rare varieties that also have lamination flaws in the planchet.

I did find this PCGS article, but all the image links are broken.

I did manage to pull a preview image from Google from the search terms "pcgs no-grade-83-400.jpg" but the lamination flaw on that 1883 nickel is quite large.

Good question. I have a Liberty nickel with a small lamination error on the crown and I saw a MS 64 Peace dollar on GC with another lamination error that didn't seem effect the grading.........

i think there may be two components of this. one is does it affect grade and the other is does it affect value.

from what I understand lamination errors are considered post strike errors and effects grades. here's what PCGS graders say about it in this vid. based on the severity of the lamination, they may assign a code 83 (peeling lamination) to the coin

as for value, If it's minor, it might still hold good value. On the other hand, if the lamination is severe, it could lower the grade or details it. minor laminations may even be acceptable like the one Marv posted. value is always in the eye of the beholder as they say. personally I wouldn't pay full price for a flawed coin, and probably would not purchase one.
