...since they have not put the 2009 Mint Set on sale, wouldn't that have to make more for those sets?
Yes, but since 2005 the mint set coins are made with a special satin finish and are distinct from the regular business strikes.

Jbuck....thanks for that information....I have not seen a mint set since I moved from the US to the UK back in 1998.

Did a bit of searching for pics on the internet but could not find a good example which shows the difference between a business strike and satin finish one.

Some have said that the "difference" between a good conditioned biz. strike and the SF ones are very hard to tell the difference, and in their opinion....still the same coin to them....
I believe one of our Moderators Metalman has this view.

That may be true with the 1965~1967 special mint set coins, but with the satin finish coins, the planchets are specially prepared and different from the regular ones, just like proof planchets are.

Then again, with the mints quality control (or lack thereof) you may be right!

Whether you believe satin finish mint set coins are different from business strikes or not, the 2009 mint set cents are most definitely different since they are 95% copper and not copper plated zinc!

True enough for this year ! ...

This is part of what he disagreed with too thoughJB....

Metalman made his point of contention that the difference isn't enough to warrant a "seperation" in his view. And he challenged anyone to lay two of them side by side and be able to tell them apart....SF & Uncirculated.....
(He can certainly speak for himself quite well........and I'm not going to spend an hour trying to find his "quote" from the a previous thread !..... maybe he'll see this and re-affirm his opinion and stance.) .......it was an interesting opinion for sure and one that made me ponder this with a different curiosity)

I can tell them apart. They do look different, at least when they come from the mint. Now, if someone were to break them out and spend them, then all bets are off.

My point is that even if they do not look different, they are different. They are marketed as being "special" coins. They are made with different planchets. I believe they are made with a different set of dies, or at least during earlier die states. Can someone confirm?

I went to my bank yesterday and saw a brand new String and Son box of Dimes, so I bought them. Turns out they were 2008-P rolls...all brand new.

Anyone else noticing that the majority of the people on ebay selling the single 2009 Nickels are from Puerto Rico? How's that fair?

This just strikes me as utterly ridiculous that coins of the current year are selling for such exorbitant prices. Any coin that has a mintage of a million or more technically is not scarce in any way. So I still expect to pluck my BU 2009 dimes and nickels from circulation in the coming years.

Does any one have any friends who's name has plenty of vowels in it, that might be able to do them a favor and locate a box or two of 2009 nickels and dimes, or a few boxes? It's not always what you know!

I've gotten two 2009-P Dimes in change here in Massachusetts. They are not Proof Only issues, but they do have lower than normal mintages. ~ Jim
