Hello, this is my first post on the forum. I'd like to know if anyone knows the origin of these countermarks or has any information about them. I believe they are private merchant countermarks, but I don't know if they are listed in Brunk. I'm writing an article about these countermarks on Chilean coins; any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I already checked and didn't find any of those countermarks. I thought they might be in the 2003 version, but I don't have access to that book. Do you know where they could have come from?

@Matu ... Offhand, I can tell you that the ones recessed in rectangles are potentially silversmiths and/or watchmakers. From my experience, forty-plus years of researching c/s's, it's not worth the countless hours you'll spend, trying to attribute stand-alone, simple initials. The recessed ones, hallmarks, are definitely worth researching; these, as are the surnames. It's been my experience that larger sized c/s's, 6mm or more, tend to be more difficult to attribute.

None of the c/s's shown are in my collection/database of 3,000 pieces. Thus, yours are all mavericks to me. All c/s's are rare in terms of numbers known. The great majority of them today survive in numbers of fewer than twenty specimens. Many thousands of mavericks await attribution, and that's what most attracted me to this genre ... going where few numismatists seriously venture. Researching your collection, you'll get great some insight for an article; this, even if you fail to make any positive attributions. For me, the journey is initially most of the fun. Of course, making a positive ID is icing on the cake.

to CCF Matu

But please next time post only one coin in a topic - each coin/token/medal deserved a topic of its own so it is easier to track the comments.

@ExoGuy Thank you so much for the information! Do you happen to know of any other private merchant countermarks on Chilean coins? That would be very helpful for the article.

Sorry to report that I don't. While I have dozens of early U.S. merchant c/s's on Hispanic coins, I've not specified any of the countries. I do easily recognize those from Mexico; this, given their telltale mintmarks. As I'm far more focused on the merchants, I've never been that concerned with any host coin's country of origin.

As to your specific request, I suggest you check out the Heritage and Stack's auction websites; these, among others. You could thereupon search for Chilean coins with merchant counterstamps and/or countermarks. The term countermark is typically used wherein world coins are concerned. So, conduct separate searches for counterstamp and countermark and you'll improve upon your search results. Also, I suggest conductiing searches with and without the use of "merchant." Finally, simply try googling combinations of those terms along with coin, auction, Chile, etc. and use the AI option as well.

Happy hunting! ...
And, to the CCF
