I bought an uncirculated 1878-S Morgan dollar and wanted to ask if you thought it would be worth getting graded and also what grade you think it could get. I paid $104 for it - is that a good price ungraded? I'd also appreciate any thoughts you might have on the coin - here it is:

Welcome to the CCF!

Being a common date with nearly 10 million minted, the price seems fair. MS63 territory. I don't like the hit on the eagles upper leg, looks kind of deep. Not worth grading. Cost of coin plus cost of grading would add up to more than the coin is worth,
IMO.

Thank you for the input!

The reason I bought this coin is that I wanted a first year production Morgan and the S mint mark seemed to be much more available than the Philadelphia coins. Speaking thereof, the local coin dealer here has a 1878 Philadelphia 8TF Morgan in similar condition for $320 - that seemed extremely high so I passed and bought this. Would a regular 7TF 1878 Philadelphia Morgan be worth similar to the 1878-S? I am very new to Morgan collecting and trying to learn.

Another thing I have noticed is that there is, in general, some variation to the thicknesses of Morgan and Peace dollars. For example, when comparing the rim thickness of this coin to an uncirculated 1924 Peace dollar I have, this one is ever so slightly thinner and has a "rolled" edge whereas the Peace dollar has a "square" edge. I guess the exact thickness of the rim is a function of die pressure as that would control how much metal is pushed up into the edge. Has anyone else ever paid attention to variations in this?
