Hello, coin friends.

Innovation dollars, along with American small dollars in general, seem to be heavily geared towards collectors.

How is this coin series to get into? I haven't really seen much about them honestly.

You buy them. Rather than find them.

Sounds like baseball cards when you put it that way.

I am building a collection of Innovation Dollars, by subscription from the US Mint for the Proofs, and also by subscription on ebay for the BU coins.

It's the same as other non-circulating series that people subscribe to, or buy aftermarket, like ASEs, AGEs, Mint Sets, Proof Sets, Medals, et al.

I could not have said that better myself.

For what it is worth, just about every golden dollar I have found in change was really a brown dollar. They tone fast in commerce.

I was building a collection of proof and reverse proof, buying the sets from the Mint on subscription.

I have been putting them in a Dansco P&D album—Proof and Different Proof.

Then the Mint decided they would no longer be offering the proof.

Now I will have empty P holes, unless I decide to source some business strikes at the coin shows. Mint mark does not matter, cannot see it in the Dansco.

yep, pretty much, just like you buy ASEs rather than find them in circulation

Sounds like a plan!
I didn't buy an album for mine until a few months ago. I've gathered P, D, Pf & RP through 2025. I got a blank CAPS album, so I'll just label three per year instead of four. But bummed that they dropped the Proofs.

The Mint likes to mess with album fillers. The satin finish experiment, adding business strike quarters from San Francisco, random coins with W mint marks.

Like jbuck, I began with the proof and reverse proof sets. Not an album guy so I didn't go after the uncirculated issues. If I'm still on the right side of the dirt when the series ends in 2032, it will be a nice augment to my collection. The first nine reverse proof coins (issued from 2018 - 2020) had very nice slipcase style elaborate packaging which offered photos and brief narratives; the 2020-S Maryland coin featuring the Hubble Space Telescope is one example:
US-Innovation-Dollars
US-Innovation-Dollars
US-Innovation-Dollars
My thinking was my grandchildren might enjoy going through these snippets of history. In the packaging for the first RevProof release in 2018, one finds the original intent of the series:

Quote:
"to honor innovation and innovators. . ." and to "strengthen our connections as citizens by bringing to life the spirit of discovery that has guided this country since its earliest days."

In 2021, the Mint transitioned the Rev Proof coins to 4 coin sets packaged in lenses accompanied by a COA. Disappointing to this collector.

I was content to leave them in the OGP until they shifted to the four coin sets. I still have those first nine OGP out and accessible, not in storage like all the others.

I started them last year when I got back into coin collecting. Went and got the proof and reverse proof coins as well as the P&D issues. Now I just have the Reverse Proof set on subscription from the Mint and I buy an annual subscription for the P&D issues on ebay, that way when they are released the seller sends them out and I don't have to remember to order them in case they sell out. The space coins are popular and I think the series is going to be a sleeper.
