These are so hard for me to grade--so many weak strikes, especially on the globes, make it difficult for me to grade these.

A good looking example to me.

I do not know how to grade them, but I will be watching this.

I say it grades as 'much nicer than my example'.

I usually unveil the grades about 48 hours after the original post. I am grateful for the reads and comments so far, but no one has actually guessed. Should I extend this one for another day in case someone wants to guess?

I was hoping that someone else would guess, as I'll most likely be embarrassingly wrong. I'll go with 64.

@HondoB: Those look like they have stories to tell. I want to listen to them.

And thanks for guessing.

I like Hondo's guess.
In my experience, U.S. TPGs generally grade higher than European experts who will ding the grade for worn dies or weak strikes that make the coin look mushy.

I see virtually flawless fields, no distracting dings if that little defect at 11:00 obverse is a planchet flaw.

Beautiful coin.

So, this one is tough. I like the coin because of its color, subdued but present luster, and the cleanness of the surfaces. My favorite part of this design is the globes, though, and there is some strike weakness there, if not a rub of wear. I don't see these this nice very often--if I see one in the future with full globes I may go for it, though. Until then, this is my "type coin" for Mexican Pillar 1/2 reales.

The globes and raised outlines of the shield may show a little wear. But 58, really?

@jecz79 and @jbuck: Are you saying you think it is undergraded? I agree that the surface preservation is wonderful on this one, but if there is slight wear, then isn't AU(58) appropriate?

I am surprised that it was not considered mint state.

Yes. I am. If there is wear, it is not obvious to me.

But I will admit, I have zero experience with the series and I am biased comparing it to modern issues where standards are much higher (do to technological advancement).

In other words, howlcould a coin minted in 1750 look (hypothetically) 11 to 12 points better than this?

It's a beauty, I'm very surprised it didn't get an MS grade.
