Anyone know the status of this coin? Is it really likely to happen? I collect modern gold commeratives, and am potentially faced with a moral dilemma here.

I am not sure. But if they do make one, you can just pretend it does not exist and not buy it.

My understanding is that the coin is a done deal with designs already approved by the US Commission of Fine Arts. Still TBD are the coin's denomination, size and weight - but I could be a large, heavy and expensive coin.

Aw, shucks! Y'all probably would probably pass on a Benedict Arnold gold commemorative, too.

It's really looking like it.
Potentially there may be a way to put the brakes on it.
I'm not for this at all.
It's somehow more palatable to me if it's going to be gold. Some big monstrosity is even better, even less people will set it much less own it.
My main concern would be against any circulating coinage. I don't care if there is some huge vanity heroes medal with his mug on it.
Also hoping his signature doesn't end up on paper currency.

I don't face this exact moral dilemma because I don't collect modern gold commemoratives. Even if I did collect them, it wouldn't be a problem because I generally like Trump. Perhaps I'll wait a few years and buy one when the price goes down to melt like most gold modern commemoratives. However, I do face this moral dilemma when it comes to Presidential dollars. It's not the presidents that were in office before my time that I bother me. Sure, I know some were good presidents and others weren't, but the fact that I wasn't around or perhaps old enough to "know" them when they were president somehow makes them seem less personal to me. Carter was the first president that I remember during his presidency. He and the ones since seem more personal. It's almost a feeling like having their coin means that I approve of them. That's ok for the ones that I liked or am indifferent about, but not for the ones that I think did a bad job. So, what to do? For me, I decided that keeping a complete collection is enough of a drive to override how I feel about the ones I don't like, though I do waiver at times. You'll just have to decide if that same drive is enough for you.

BTW, this is why I don't like dead presidents on coins or currency and much prefer depictions of liberty. I think that if a historical figure is going to be on a coin, it should probably be someone that most people hold in high regard, Sacagawea for example. Of course, that's getting harder to do given how much more internally divided we are as a country. I do think that the semiquincentennial coins are a good example of how coinage should be done.
