Hey guys, I admit, I am not adept at identifying the markers of a clipped planchet but this looks like one to me. Thoughts? Found while late night coin roll hunting.

I find this to be a tough subject.
Many of these "clipped planchets" look more like something made at home, but are actually "clipped planchets" according to the experts.

. . . Now, where did I leave my Dremel?

E&B my buddy, can you tell me why you think this is a "clipped planchet"?
My reason for not thinking it is: I don't see the correct round resemble the error cut edge of a nickel here; as I said before, "this is a tough topic".) Could be a good learning discussion for me.. .

In actuality a punched planchet isn't a "clean" cut - it's more like 70% cut and then the final 30% shear/tear which the clipped edge shows perfectly.....

Here's why I am definite it's a legitimate Clipped Planchet.

1. The devices around the clip are thinner and tapered, which is a good indicator of a true Clipped Planchet. There will also be metal flow around that area as well.
2. The edge of the clipped area is "clean" with no damage from PMD. If it was PMD, that area in question would be rough, jagged, and not cleanly cut from being punched out of the metal strip.
3. Sometimes, but not always, the Blakesley Effect is present on the opposite side of the clip.

I see no reason why it's not a legitimate Clipped Planchet. Everything looks fine to me. If it was truly PMD, that clip would be rough, have scrapes, damage, etc. Those 3 diagnostics I posted above is what you need to look for to ID a Clipped Planchet. There's more, but you get the idea. If you don't see any of those diagnostics listed above, then it's probably not a true Clipped Planchet.

I hope this helps.

Thank you so much Marv & E&V, I've learned something today, thanks to you guys!
I do know that a Clipped Planchet is clipped before it is struck with a die.
. . Help me understand this:
Why aren't the characters in the word "God" pushed upwards (stretched) when no retainer is present in that area to keep the medal from flowing outwards?
