Hey everyone — longtime coin collector here. I started collecting when I was about 8 years old, and now at 54 I'm still enjoying the hobby just as much. Like many collectors, life occasionally forced me to put the hobby on pause for a while, but I always found my way back to it.

I enjoy collecting all kinds of coins, but I'm especially drawn to early American coinage and coins tied to meaningful family dates and special events. I'm also one of those people who still buys proof sets — fully aware they probably won't ever be worth much financially. But to me, there's something special about the idea that one day my kids or future grandchildren might come across proof sets from their birth years and have that connection to family history.

I'm also a huge history buff, and one of the things I love most about coin collecting is using coins to help teach my children — and others — about the history of our country and the world. Every coin has a story behind it, and I think that's one of the greatest parts of this hobby.

Looking forward to learning from everyone here and sharing in the community.

You sound just like myself. Whenever I pick up and old coin I often wonder who had this in their hand. I too am partial to the early coinage with devices symbolic of liberty rather than devices of dead presidents or other people. The early coins have class that I don't see with modern coinage. Collecting for the fun and history is the way to go and if there is a financial gain at the end of the rainbow then that's even better but not a priority for me. Happy collecting my friend and please post some pictures when you are able!

@MisterT - I couldn't agree more regarding early coinage and the beauty it contained. I have really enjoyed the Quincentennial coinage that has been produced, especially the new dime design.

The design is incredible—very old school with a great deal of deep meaning. I wish it would be made permanent, as it is clear that a lot of thought went into the overall concept.
