In recent years, after finishing my 7070 Type Set and putting together a simplified Proof Type Set of U.S. coins, I have focused on purchasing various "key date" U.S. coins when I go to my one big coin show each year (in addition to various notes for my ongoing U.S. Currency Type Set).

Well, the big coin show is coming up soon at the end of July, and I really don't have anything in particular that I am looking for and would love some suggestions. My budget is up to a few thousand dollars for a coin in good condition, so that eliminates some of the more expensive options such as the 1856 Flying Eagle cent or the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter or pretty much anything made of gold these days.

You can see the key dates I already have on my Slabbed Coins page, but here's a quick list:
1892 Liberty Head ("Barber") Dime
1892 Liberty Head ("Barber") Quarter
1892 Liberty Head ("Barber") Half Dollar (Proof)
1909-S Indian Head cent
1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent
1916-D Winged Liberty ("Mercury") Dime
1916-S Walking Liberty half dollar
1921 Peace dollar
1932-D Washington quarter
1937 Buffalo nickel (3 Legs)
1952 Franklin half dollar (Proof)
1972 Eisenhower dollar (Type 2 Reverse)

Anything else you'd suggest for a "key date" within the realm of affordability in decent shape?

I was going to recommend an Ike, but you already got it.

That was actually the very first "key date" coin I ever bought, since it was the only one that was actually affordable to me in decent condition at the time.

I can see that with all the heavy hitters on the list.

We both "settled" for a 63 for that one. Much nicer than all the AUs I kept finding before it.

I suppose I could focus on finding a better example...

Simply amazing! I'd look into more 19th century coinage like large and Half Cents.

You would be my hero!

If you are serious about upgrading, you gotta go with at least a 65 since you have "a few thousand dollars" to play with.

Indeed, that would be the entire point. I sincerely doubt I would actually be able to find such a coin at the show, to be honest, but it's certainly something to look out for.

Are there any particular key dates you had in mind, or just nice examples in general?

How about a Feuchtwanger Cent?
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

There are a couple on ebay, but it would be more fun to find at the show.

Indeed. I do occasionally buy stuff on ebay, but I really look forward to going to this show once a year and try to hold off making any major purchases until then.

Of course, if I don't find one at the show and can't think of anything else to buy...
