I had promised myself no more expensive ancients a few years ago.
Now Hadrian showed up and I broke my promise!

Hadrian-Made-Me-Break-A-Promise---Sestertius-Ric-II.3-160-?

I miss the days when sestertius were cheapish.

But it was such a nice portrait and such a roman sestertius, with Anonna in the reverse. I just could not resist. And the orichalcum colour is visible where the patina was stripped. Too bad about the reverse in worse condition than the obverse.

The reverse legend is barely readable but on hand it can be read. I believe it is the COS II year. No space left for another III even if it had completely corroded away. I only found 2 pictures of COS II year coins and one (ANS) has the big laurels on top also. The COS III coins I saw all have small laurels.
I think I could read the reverse legend better if I stripped away the dark patina. There is still metal breaking through it. But will not do it.

If I am correct this dates to when Hadrian was first announcing in his currency what he paid out to the people on taking office.
It looks like this variant is now being classified RIC II.3 160. But I also found RIC 549 as an older reference. Or would that be the the ones struck in his third year?
IS RIC II an update?

True, thanks. Forgot to note the weight. 25.9 g. Must have lost some weight but not much.

I may now be taking more than my fair share of Hadrian sestertius for a casual collector of ancients Ulso had the Hispania one from the travels series. Unfortunately missing the rabbit. That one I had to have, my province. This had a better bust, was my excuse.
