Quote: Those are really nice BadThad, any idea what caused the toning? Toning is caused by exposure to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The sulfur reacts with the metal surface to form the corresponding metal + sulfur. Light refracts differently based on the thickness of the layer. It's kind of like how light + water droplets form a rainbow. The book Coin Chemistry details H2S and its role in toning very well, it's worth a read. The sources of hydrogen sulfide are many! From bacteria to rotting organic matter.

Always hard to capture toning in a photo, this looks real nice in person. Any ideas on the spot on reverse in the pillars and in the hair. Just more toning starting, these spots were not there 10 years ago.

Nice coins everyone, it does seem to be hard to bring out the toning, so I bet all your coins are even better looking in hand, Here's one of my toned Mercurys. I managed to bring out some of the toning, but it looks much better in hand:

So it wouldn't be considered full bands from a TPG, right?

Wow, hadleydog and Podoprigora, that 1909 VDB and Mercury dime are really neat. I don't have any more toned coins, so I guess I'll just have to comment.

Thanks a LOT for this information, BadThad! I've been wanting to know the chemical process that creates a toned coin. I will definitely check out this book.
I'm jealous of everyone's toned coins. They are all so pretty!

maaaaaaaaaan there is some nice stuff coming out here!! I picked up a 1964 Mexican Peso at a coin store in El Paso this week. I believe it's 10% silver and it BU with some toning on it. The guy only wanted $2 for it, so I said SOLD. Of course, I'm sure he would rather I had purchased the slabbed 1916-D Merc or 1893-S Morgan he had. If you guys like toned coins, check out https://www.islandcoins.com (I have no affiliation to this site). I'm contemplating buying something from there. Has anyone dealt with them before?
