Hi folks, I'm new to the site so I thought this might be a chance to test uploading both an image and a quote. Quote: surprisingly equal spacing - much like a plowed field Here in the farm-belt of the US, we have a thing called contoured plowing, so I'm relieved that this VDB doesn't have a fingerprint after all Seriously, I'm loving this website in general and all of these toned coins are amazing. Sorry about the quality of the snap, it was done in haste. Do most of y'all photograph your coins as you acquire them, as an aid to cataloging?

Cascade- I really like that 1885. I could have sworn that I saw it on ebay the other day. Did you buy it? I have a 1904-O that is sort of similar to yours except that it has a range of colors on the obverse. Here it is. It looks like a thunderstorm is raging on the obverse. The reverse is blast white. A crazy combination.

Sweet one darth, if it were mine I'd name it "Tequila Storm-rise" (took me all of 2 seconds to come up with that after I layed eyes on it) I bought the 85 a year or so ago raw I really like it too, it was one of my early posts here. If I remember right not that many people liked it and one suggestion was made that it could have been a Redfield peach can morgan. Does it look like a textile to you? A pattern type you've seen before?

Cascade, that '85 is definitely not a fingerprint. It doesn't appear to have the same pattern as the cloth of a treasury bag, but it could very easily be another woven fabric or leather from a wallet. Many old coins were simply saved in the bottom of dresser drawers. (And as newcomers often feel that the "good old days" of collecting has come and gone, and there is no research left to do, let me assure you that every answer poses another question, and the field of toning patterns has much to be explored.) Biedercoins, I used to believe that all marks on album coins were caused by the thumbprint upon insertion. Maybe they deserve a second look. Nice coin, I should explore the Wheaties, but I have trouble doing it all. Darth, the blast white reverse is not uncommon - especially if the coin lay flat and the reverse was protected, often in an album or drawer. The unoxidized (white areas) of the obverse can be caused by several things including a brush with something oily before the toning began. Slabbed coins can be difficult to photograph, and for those that aren't aware, be careful, hot lamps can soften the plastic. I really like all three of your coins and try to imagine how they would really "pop" if photographed by some of those gurus on the photography threads. Thanks all for sharing. Lets get some more.

Cool darth but you must agree... mine is WAY better. I've never seen a morgan with a pattern that truly looks like she is in the rain other than mine. Your tequila storm is close though

Was that from tape or a rubber band? Do we have any ideas what made that happen?

It was one of my early posts kid, I think the conclusion was either tape or an album with cardboard strips instead of plastic slides to hold the coin in. It's my favorite "unusual pattern" toners & one of my favorites, maybe top 3 or 5 period... here's the op https://goccf.com/t/198202

Great Collections had an awesome "strip" pattern Morgan like that one, except the pattern was on the reverse. It was a monster rainbow to boot. I was at work when it ended last Sunday night, and I missed bidding. I am thinking seriously about buying that murky Morgsn I linked to above. I like it more every time I see it. Ahhh. Decisions. Decisions.

Go for it darth! Broken cc has a monochrome neon monster I want for 500. They were closed when I went back or I would have got it. Do you mean this one? I was bidding on it to but stopped at 245. Here's the ebay ID # 331564368063
